How to prepare for a dance showcase

Set the date and plan accordingly

Once you know the date of your showcase, you can work backward to figure out your timeline. The week or so before the performance should be essentially cleared out from your calendar to allow enough time to prepare, and you will need to allow enough time in your schedule to practice for around 2-3 months beforehand. The organization is key to nailing your performance and you should dedicate as much time as you have to get it right.

Practice, practice, practice

As with anything dance-related, practice really does make perfect. You will need to practice your choreography almost to death to ensure that you get it right on the night and, with dance, there really is no such thing as being over-prepared. Dancing in front of an audience is very different from dancing in a studio. If you haven’t practiced enough, it is all too easy for your mind to go blank or for you to make mistakes that you wouldn’t normally make. By practicing enough that your routine is almost muscle memory, your body will take over when you have these moments of doubt.

Understand yourself

Different people have different little rituals before a performance. It is worth taking the time to figure out what helps you to stay calm and get in the right headspace to perform. This could be meditation or mindfulness, positive affirmations, listening to a certain piece of music, or even eating a specific snack. Whatever works for you!

Stay healthy

Your body needs to be in its best state of health so that you can perform perfectly during your showcase. Try not to let the stress and anticipation get to you and make sure that you are taking care of your body as well as your mind. This includes eating right, taking the time to rest, getting out and enjoying the fresh air, and spending time with friends.
