But, even if you have heard the name, you may not be entirely sure what it actually is. So let’s take a look at this video with some fun Zumba choreography to give you a little taste of what you might expect in a Zumba class.

Zumba is the largest branded fitness program in the world with over 200,000 class locations spread across 180 countries. It was created by a Colombian dancer and choreographer called Alberto “Beto” Perez and was originally called “Rumbercise”, which is a play on Jazzercise (another dance fitness craze) and rumba. In a Zumba class, you will dance to Latin music using a library of core steps. There are four basic rhythms: salsa, reggaeton, merengue, and cumbia and each of these rhythms has four core steps associated with it. At the beginning and the end of class, you will dance to a slower beat and in the main part of the class, you will dance to a faster beat. Classes are generally between 45 minutes and 60 minutes long.

So why did Zumba explode in popularity? The first reason is probably that it is a lot of fun! But it also really works in terms of improving your fitness and losing weight (if that is your goal). You can expect to burn between 300 and 900 calories per class and you will also improve your cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and agility at the same time. But because it’s so fun, it feels more like a party than a workout.

Zumba is also very accessible. You don’t need any sort of dance training to be able to keep up in class because the core steps are easy to learn and apply. It is also low-impact so is suitable for a wide range of people, even with some health conditions or injuries.
