Traditional bachata is danced in a square with an eight-count and consists of three steps and then a tap or double step. It is danced in a closed embrace and it is a dance that is gaining popularity around the world. There are lots of bachata congresses and festivals and the chances are there will be a bachata social near you.

Bachata is also a dance that is fun to play around with and a wide variety of bachata fusion styles have been developed. The most popular of which is probably bachata sensual. It was developed in Cadiz in 2005 and it mixes traditional bachata with other Latin dances and puts a sensual spin on the dance.

Many people consider bachata sensual to be a more demanding and advanced style. This can be argued either way but it is true that in order to dance bachata sensual, you need to be able to perform movements and styling from dance styles like tango, salsa, zouk, and more. The dance is also characterised by body waves and sometimes body isolations and dips. It has more accentuated movements, a greater range of footwork, and smoother styling than traditional bachata.

Even with these additions, however, bachata sensual still retains its traditional bachata roots. It uses the same eight counts with a tap or double-step on the fourth and the eighth count, and it is still recognisably bachata. Just with a little extra flair!
