When you’re planning your wedding, it’s natural to think about everything from the seating chart to who will be speaking during the ceremony. Another somewhat difficult decision for some is what to do for their first dance as a married couple. Should you choreograph it or just wing it on the dance floor? There are pros and cons to both options, however, there is definitely something special about having a well prepared dance routine that you and your partner will remember for years to come.

YouTube video

Take a look at this video for inspiration, it’s a wedding dance rumba choreography from the “Dance From Home” YouTube Channel and it’s absolutely beautiful. They dance to “Forever My Love” by Ed Sheeran and J Balvin. All the steps are simple to follow and it’s so smooth you can almost watch it over and over again without getting bored. It has everything a first dance needs – a beautiful song that you can easily listen to on repeat, lots of romantic moments where you can look into each other’s eyes, and of course, some easy-to-learn dance moves.

Couples who love to dance together will most definitely want to take part in a special first dance at their wedding. It’s a great opportunity for you to share your passion for dancing with your friends and family in a fun, unique and memorable way. However, the whole process of learning and choreographing the routine can be a wonderful experience in itself. You and your partner will be spending this time having fun while learning new moves. You will be practicing together at home before the big day and that will strengthen your bond even more.

Nonetheless, I would not recommend choreographing your first dance if that is causing a lot of stress or conflict between the two of you. Dancing is something you have to enjoy doing together otherwise the whole exercise will not only be disappointing but also stressful for your relationship. And taking into consideration all other preparations for the wedding, you might not want to add another headache into the mix.

If you have a great instructor who is patient and knows how to make you feel comfortable and relaxed while you practice, then this is a great option for you that is worth considering. Otherwise, just leave it out and improvise, it can be even more special and romantic when all the pressure is off. Remember that you are getting married after all and it’s not all about the choreography anyway. I personally believe that the real magic happens in those unplanned moments when you are free and natural and just focus on the music and enjoy being in the moment with your spouse.

Anyways there is no straight answer on whether you should improvise or choreograph your first dance so don’t stress about it too much. In the end, it’s more about how you feel and the more relaxed you are about the whole process the better it will be for both of you and your overall experience on your wedding day. Choose whatever works best for you as a couple. And if it doesn’t go as planned it’s not the end of the world. Just enjoy it and have fun with it. That’s the most important thing to remember!
