Most of the time, you will be learning and practicing your dance routine in the studio. But you may also come across opportunities to dance in the street. Whether it’s as part of a performance with an audience or you’re filming a video, dancing in the street can be a lot of fun and look good too.

Just take a look at this video of Ataca and La Alemana doing their thing, dancing bachata in the street, and looking amazing while they do so! There’s no denying that it’s different to dancing indoors, however, so you might need to take a moment to prepare.

1. Warm-up

Warming up is always an important thing to do before you dance. But it is even more important to make sure that you warm up before you dance outside because your muscles are going to be that much colder than they would be if you were in a warm studio. Never underestimate the benefits of warming-up before dancing as it can prevent many injuries that can affect your dancing long term.

2. Choose your location

Picking the right spot to dance in is also an important consideration. You need to make sure that you have enough floor space to be able to complete all the moves that you want to and you also need to be considerate of other people who are using the area. The last thing you want is to knock into someone or fly your arm out and hit them in the face!

3. Choose your shoes wisely

A lot of dance shoes both for women and men aren’t designed to be worn outside. Their soles are usually made to be perfect for dance floors and dance floors only, with materials like suede. This can mean that you don’t have enough grip for an outside floor so you end up slipping and you could also ruin the suede on the soles if there is any moisture on the floor.

Dance sneakers are the perfect shoes for street dance because they can be used outside but they also give you enough flexibility to be able to dance properly. If you want a pair of sneakers just like Ataca’s, check out our handy guide to dance sneakers for men, women, and kids.
