For those who don’t know, Kompa, aka Konpa Gouyad, is a popular Haitian dance style that involves close partner dancing with quite intricate hip movements. It’s often described as a fun, romantic dance that brings Haitian culture to life. The music origins of Kompa date back to the 1800s. But it started gaining widespread popularity in the 1950s. Today, it is huge in Haiti and Haitian communities abroad and is commonly danced at weddings, parties and nightclubs.
