Belly dancing is a centuries old dance form that has been growing in popularity for many years. Many people enjoy this dance for its unique and beautiful movements. However, some people feel that it can be inappropriate for certain occasions. So of course, there is no right or wrong answer to this question – it all depends on personal beliefs, views, costumes and the choreography itself.

Take a look at this video of BellyViolett choreography from the oriental dance show “One Thousand and One Nights”. Does it make you feel uncomfortable? I personally believe it’s a great example of perfect balance between the openness of the costumes and choreography. It leaves room for interpretation as to its appropriateness for all audiences. I find it enjoyable and tasteful!

On the other hand, some people feel that it is completely inappropriate to be performing this style of dance at more formal events such as weddings or corporate parties. And I can totally agree if the performers are wearing too revealing costumes or behaving in an inappropriate manner on stage. But who actually decides what is considered ‘too revealing’ and what is not? Where is this line that divides what is OK and what is not?

Ultimately, it all comes down to personal opinions and personal choices. So if you would like to have a belly dance performance on any of your events, make sure you check the details with the performer beforehand to avoid any misunderstandings. And even then, there is no guarantee that everyone will be 100% comfortable with it. So just accept the risk that a couple of guests may not enjoy the performance and keep an open mind about it. But after all, it’s your event and you can do what you want with it.

If you are a belly dancer yourself and plan to perform at an event that is a little more formal or includes young audience, my recommendation is to wear more covered-up outfits with less skin exposure if that is possible to avoid potential unpleasant situations. It’s always a good idea to discuss the details of the performance with your client before the actual event so they can give you feedback in advance. This way you can avoid any potential problems or at least be prepared for them. Less problems means better experience for everyone and more chance of having a repeat booking in the future!

So to sum it up, I strongly believe that performing a belly dance at almost any event is a great idea as long as everyone involved is comfortable with the it and all the details have been discussed in advance. It’s a wonderful show to watch and everyone will leave with a big smile on their face. Some may even start dancing along and join the fun!
